Leiomyosarcoma of the Inferior Vena Cava

Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is a rare malignant vascular tumor, slow growing and often discovered late. Clinical presentation depends on the level of the IVC involved and diagnosis relies mostly on imaging methods. Two hundred and eighteen cases have been reported in the literature. The authors present the case of a 56-year-old man who underwent surgery for removal of a leiomyosarcoma of the medial caval segment. The procedure involved a radical excision with reconstruction of the IVC and reimplantation of the right renal vein. Clinical presentation, diagnosis and therapeutic modalities are discussed.
