Chronic Carotid Dissection Producing New Neurologic Symptoms: An Alternative Method of Autogenous ReconstructionA Case ReportDepartment of Surgery, St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis Missouri; St. Paul, Minnesota
Department of Surgery, Regions Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota; St. Louis Missouri A case of chronic carotid dissection associated with new neurologic symptoms was treated with occipital artery to internal carotid artery bypass. After surgery, the patient remained without neurologic symptoms with a widely patent anastomosis. This novel reconstruction has not previously been reported and provides a suitable alternative for patients with inadequate greater saphenous vein. The mechanism causing this injury and management algorithms are discussed with a review of the literature.
