Vascular Rereconstruction and Major Amputations A Case Report

In an effort to increase the probability of primary below-knee amputation healing the author converted a common femoral artery to dorsalis pedis artery vein bypass to a common femoral artery to below-knee popliteal bypass to a blind popliteal segment along with a below-knee amputation in a patient with an osteomyelitic Chopart amputation. The patient was rapidly and successfully rehabilitated with a prosthesis and the bypass remained patent. This case report illustrates that preservation of the important functional aspect of the knee joint in the elderly population is justification for vascular reconstruction since the probability of primary below-knee amputation healing is enhanced.
