Descending Valvular Incompetence in Venous Pathophysiology — Experimental Proof

Using a small animal experimental model a large number of angiographic studies were carried out in progressive degrees of venous insufficiency. The ex istence of the DVI mechanism in venous pathophysiology was demonstrated, stressing the need for correction of proximal valvular incompetence. Further more, the beneficial effect of lowering the pressure in the proximal venous sys tem on the distal veins was documented. This study provides experimental evidence for the usefulness of venous reconstruction and justifies the more wide spread clinical application of venous reconstruction at an earlier point in venous disease.
