Correlation Between Ultrasonic Doppler Arterial Scanning of the Extracranial Circulation and Cerebral Angiography

This study reviews 42 patients linked by the fact that they had undergone noninvasive cerebral vascular evaluation using Doppler techniques and had subsequently undergone cerebral angiography. The ultrasonic findings were reviewed and categorized as were the angiographic findings. The 2 sets of results are correlated and analyzed. The suggestion is made based on the data that Doppler techniques alone are highly reliable at diagnosing severely stenotic lesions and total occlusions of the carotid vessels. However, the Doppler technique alone appears inadequate at diagnosing atherosclerotic plaque formation with quite significant lesions not causing major hemody namic flow changes. A further modality is thought to be needed, and the paper ends with a prospective study already in progress analyzing a nonin vasive system utilizing both Doppler and real time imaging techniques.
