Pathogenesis of Coarctation of the AortaDivision of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, California. 222 West Pueblo St, Santa Barbara, CAL 93105 This report concerns the pathogenesis of aortic coarctation. Normal aortic arch development and perinatal circulation are described, and current interpretations of coarctation are examined. Finally, an explana tion of the cause of coarctation is proposed. Coarctation is not a primary disease, but rather the result of some pathologic state which reduces the amount of blood crossing the prenatal aortic valve.
